Where should Rama stay?

After Ram, Sita and Laksman were sent into exile, they came to Valmiki Munis ashram and asked him for a place to dwell. Valmiki gave a very sweet answer, before he recommended them to go to Chitrakut.

Listen Rama! I will tell you now the places where you may abide with Sita and Laksman. The hearts of those whose ears are like the ocean constantly replenished with the stories of your life like many blessed streams,

but are never filled to the full, shall be your chosen abode. Again, the hearts of whose eyes yearn only for your presence as the cuckoo’s fort he rain-cloud,

and, disdaining like the same bird, rivers, oceans and big lakes, find contentment in the raindrop of your beauty, - it is their hearts, Raghunatha, which shall serve as your blissful home, where you may dwell with your brother (Laksman) and Sita.

He whose tongue, like the swan in the clear Manasa lake of your renown, gathers up the pearls of your perfections – in his heart dwell, O Rama.

Abide, O Rama, in the minds of those whose nostrils ever devoutly breathe in the pure and lovely fragrance of offerings (flowers, sandal-paste,…) made to the Lord, who eat only that which has been dedicated to you and wear clothes and ornaments consecrated to the Lord;

whose heads bow down most submissively and lovingly at the sight of a god, a teacher or a brahman; whose hands perpetually adore Rama’s feet, who cherish in their hearts faith in Rama and none else;

and whose feet take them to holy places sacred to Rama. Again, those who are ever engaged in muttering your name, the king of all sacred formulas, and worship you with all their kin;

who offer various kinds of liberation and burnt-sacrifice; who feed the brahmans and bestow liberal gifts on them and who look upon the qualified guru as greater even than yourself and wait upon him and honour him in every way;

who having done all this demand but one boon as their reward, devotion to Rama’s feet – enthrone yourself in the temple of their hearts, you two brothers together with Sita.

Those who know no lust or anger, arrogance, pride or infatuation, are without greed, excitement, attraction or aversion and who are free from guile, hypocrisy or fraudulence – it is in their hearts that you should dwell, O Raghuraja.

Again, those who are beloved of all and work the good for all, to whom joy and sorrow, praise and abuse are alike; who scrupulously speak what is both true and kind; who, waking or asleep, place themselves under your protection;

And who have no other way of salvation but you – it is in their hearts, O Rama, that you should dwell. Those who look upon another’s wife as their own mother and to whom another’s wealth is the deadliest of all poisons;

who rejoice to see another’s prosperity and are sore distressed at his misfortune; to whom, O Rama, you are dear as their own lives – in their hearts be your blessed abode.

To whom, dear Lord, you are at once master and companion, father, mother and guru and everything else – be their hearts your temple, you two brothers, wherein with Sita to abide.

Those who desregard the evil in others and pick out what is good and endure hardships for the sake of brahmans and cows; who have established their reputation in the wolrd for their knowledge of the rules of propriety – their soul is your excellent abode.

He who attributes his virtues to you and holds himself responsible for his sinfulness; who fixes all his hopes on you and loves Rama’s (your) votaries – in his heart dwell, you and Sita.

He who renounces his caste and kinsmen, wealth, duty and glory, his dear kinsfolk and happy home, and treasures in his souls yourself alone – in his heart, O Raghunatha, take up your abode.

He to whom heaven and hell and liberation (from birth and death) are all one – for he beholds but you everywhere armed with bow and arrows – and who is your servant in thought and word and deed – in his heart, O Rama, make your permanent abode.

He who never asks anything but is devoted to you with a simple, spontaneous devotion – in his heart abide for ever, fort that is your very home!

(Sri Ramacharitamanas, Tulasidasa)
